Professor Nigel Brandon OBE from Imperial College London gave a 25 minute presentation "Innovations in electrochemical technology for the low carbon transition" followed by Q&A.

Presentation summary:

*Drivers for electrochemical tech and H2 in the energy system

*A brief intro to 3 core hydrogen technologies – CCS, fuel cells and electrolysers

*Hydrogen fuel cells for transport and heat

*Flow batteries for energy storage

*Electrolysis for chemicals

The 30 minute Q&A session covered a lot of interesting issues –The practical issues of blending hydrogen into the gas grid, carbon-dioxide air capture technology and its challenges, the various types of flow batteries and how they match up with lithium-ion for stationary storage, the merits of PEM and Solid Oxide fuel cells and whether other chemistries such as Alkaline can breakthrough. Why solid-oxide cells have a thermodynamic advantage in electrolysis.
